Holidays in the Vercors Regional Nature Park: attractive tourist destinations
The Vercors is a natural stronghold, 1,000 to 2,300m high, covering an area of 186,000 hectares between the Isère valley to the north and the Diois to the south. The Vercors Regional Nature Park was created, on 16th October 1970, with the aim of protecting and promoting its rich heritage, maintaining economic activity and developing a harmonious relationship between humans and their environment. Its reputation is such that nearly all walkers/hikers have heard of/been to the Vercors.
This vast plateau is not easily accessed. The roads leading up to it are all attractive tourist destinations in their own right: the Petits Goulets (tunnels through rock face), Combe Laval, Col de Rousset...
The Vercors has a wide variety of landscapes, home to an extraordinary range of plants and wildlife - dense forests of conifers and beech trees, the Karrenfeld on the high plateaus, 1,800 species of plants (over 60 different orchids), 135 species of nesting birds, 65 mammal species including nearly every type of cervid (ruminants which shed antlers).
